Awesomest bookshop ever!

January 19, 2009 at 2:46 am (Fun stuff, Library stuff) (, , , , )

When I have my own Library or Bookshop (still haven’t decided yet) I want it to look like this one.

 kidsbookstore1

This awesomeness is called Kids Republic, a bookshop in Beijing. It “transports it‚ pint sized customers into a delightful fairytale world full of color and fantasy complete with massive story telling screens and play areas. It’s haven for little imaginations in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the world.”  (http://www.thecoolhunter.com.au)

Very, very cool!

Thieving bastards!

January 19, 2009 at 1:11 am (Uncategorized) (, )

Today is my first day back at work in 4 weeks. Gotta love working at a  school.

Anyway, I come to work and the first thing I see is our front door to the library with its glass smashed, the handle ripped off and the bottom of one of the doors pulled up like someone had a crowbar under it.

Crap crap crap.

The inside was even worse with the second set of security doors practically pulled off the wall and the door to my off ice WAS pulled off its runners.  Cabinets were opened. Obviously they were looking for something.

Turns out they were looking for the stash of Laptops Mr. Rudd kindly donated to the school.

The only thing I can be happy about this is that the laptops aren’t stored in the Library and all their efforts to get in were wasted. Suck on that you bastards!

Luckily this all happend when I was on holidays last week and the police had already been and finger printed etc.

But seriously, what has happened to peoples morals? Stealing off  kids is one of the worst things that anyone could do.  I hope they get whats coming to them.

Bless their little Dugong hearts

January 15, 2009 at 9:22 am (Fun stuff) (, , )

I am in love…with a dugong!
Yesterday my hubby and I went to the Sydney Aquarium to see the two new dugongs.
It was the most awesome ‘animal’ experience I’ve had since we went whale watching a few years back.
I could have just stood there all day watching them eat their lettuce leaves and floating around looking pretty.
They 2 of only 5 in captivity, so if you get the chance to see them I totally recommend it!

Going alcohol free for Feb

January 12, 2009 at 3:05 am (Fun stuff) (, , , , , , )

febfast_logo

FebFast is an initiative where people pledge to give up alcohol for the entire month of February and their friends and family can sponsor them.

All funds raised go to support the reduction of alcohol and other drug related harms in young Australians.

Funds raised are distributed through a grants program to organisations working in research, prevention and service delivery around young people and substance use.

I have registered, not only to help raise money for the cause but also because it will be a worthy challenge.

You all know how much I love my beer! Its time to detox from the holidays: )

Please support me at http://www.everydayhero.com.au/heather_williams

All donations over $2 are tax deductable.

Or if you want to do it yourself check it out at:

Going back to school…yippee!

January 9, 2009 at 6:56 am (Library stuff) (, , , , , , , , )

Last year I decided I’ve had enough of being a Library Assistant and its time to become the BIG CHEESE LIBRARIAN!! And then have an action figure made after me…just like Nancy Pearl.

Librarian action figure with sushing motion. The Librarians at work hated it..stereotypical blah blah blah. But I just had to laugh.

Librarian action figure with sushing motion. The Librarians at work hated it..stereotypical blah blah blah. But I just had to laugh.

Yes, I am going to University!

Seeing as I need to continue working while studying…you know, so we don’t lose our house and all that stuff…I’ll be doing my undergraduate degree by distance education, which will be interesting to say the least. Interesting because of what I’ll be studying, interesting because I’ll actually be using my brain again and interesting because I’m usually a very good procrastinator and this will really test my will-power skills.

The uni I’m enrolled at has these awesome free courses to ease people into what will be expected of them at uni and refresh the memory on things such as essay writing etc.

So I’ve been spending my work holidays doing 4 of these courses, the first 2 were peices of cake. One was an intro to online learning…finding resources on the net and learning how to use the uni’s websites and forums etc. It was pretty simple for me as I’m no newbie to the intertubes and am quite comfortable finding my way around it.

The second course I did was a simple introduction to essay writing, time management etc. Pretty interesting and I was really pleased with my results.

This one I’m doing at the moment though is giving me a bit of a headache. Its main focus is critical thinking and essay structure. Things which I haven’t even thought for a second about since finishing TAFE 6 years ago.

We have to write an essay on “The value of the tobacco industry” using critical thinking skills. I can get all the reference information I need in the world and quite enjoy finding the resources but the problem comes when I try and transform that info into an essay that is supposed to demonstrate my critical thinking skills.

I did an essay yesterday and asked hubby to go through it last night and boy did he go through it with a big fat red pen. His major criticism was that I was just parroting the information I gathered and whacking it in there without really thinking about it.

True, true, true.

And this morning I think I figured out why I’ve been finding it so hard to take sources and think about them rather than just whack them in there willy nilly. The answer is because I work in a high school and all I’ve done for the past 7 years is help junior kids with their assignments which mostly require no original thought and thats the process my brain has got used to. Just find the info and put it in….thats all.

So today was spent trying to retrain my brain into the way it will have to think for the next four years. And I’m pretty happy with the outcome. The essay is DONE, after another red-penning by hubby, and handed in…woot! Now to wait for the results.

One more of these intro courses to go before the uni semester starts in a few weeks then the real fun begins!

My alter ego is Sydney Savage

January 7, 2009 at 11:45 pm (Fun stuff) (, , )

bt0251ss01x

Sydney Savage, Abbey Chase and JC (who is in the video game version)

My friend lent me a copy of Danger Girl: the ultimate collection, and although I ‘ve never enjoyed reading comics before (except for MAD magazine, but that doesn’t count) I just devoured this one.

Ok, so the girls in it are totally unrealistic and perfect in every way, as one of my friends said “You wouldn’t survive if you had a waist that small”. Bruce Campbell, who wrote the introduction says that ” You’ve got to buy into a world were the men are manly and the women all look like they just won a wet t-shirt contest”.

But thats not the point. They are sassy, sexy, adventurous and know what they want and how to get it.

My fave is Sydney Savage….hot in leather.

The plot is kind of ordinary…the usual try and save the world from evil wrong-dooers but the drawings are vibrant and the characters are interesting.

I’d definately recommend it for people who don’t usually read comic books, people who like a bit of adventure and sass and hot girls and guys.

Awesome!

I didn’t cause it, I can’t control it, I can’t cure it.

January 7, 2009 at 2:42 am (Bipolar stuff) (, , , , , , , , )

I’ve been struggling the past few days with my DH’s current bipolar episode and am finding it rare to come across resources for spouses of people with mental illnesses, resources that help you deal with your spouse but also with the pressures and emotions (and there are many) that the partners are under.

Yesterday I sent many hours just flicking through web pages searching for some meaning and for some help…anything at all to let me know that I’m not alone and anything to give me ideas on how to help DH and keep our relationship alive at the same time.

I came accross this website written by lady who is the wife of a bipolar man. She made me laugh at parts and made my cry also. I can definately relate to some of what Bonnie is saying and her idea of a sanctuary where spouses of people with mental illnesses can go to connect, talk and relax is absolutely awesome.

Check out her website at http://getolife.com/what.aspx

I especially related to the ‘Reality’, ‘Stay or leave’. The ‘why not work’ and the ’stressors’ page gave me a laugh.

The title of this page is borrowed from her ’stickers’ page. When I read this I felt a sense of calm I hadn’t felt for days.

Another useful website I stumbled across was
http://www.bpso.org/

It is aimed at Bipolar Significant Others (aka, spouses and families) and has a fantastic collection of links to all kinds of useful information, such as Bonnies page.

I guess the only thing for me to keep in mind is that a lot of these websites assume the bipolar person is on meds and under a doctors care, which is not the case with us…and also that most of this stuff is aimed at an American audience.

It would be great if there were some Australian sites like these….maybe they are out there and I’m just not seeing them?

Into the darkness once more….

January 5, 2009 at 9:32 am (Bipolar stuff) (, , , , , , , )

Somedays I don’t think I can handle it anymore….and then I think about how he must be feeling and I know I have to stick it out.

The darkness has plagued us for years now, rearing its ugly head every few months and making life hell for both of us. Hell for him because he has to live with the pain and life-sucking depression, and me because I live to try and pick up the pieces and keep our life together.

I love him so much. All I can think is that it will pass…just believe that it will pass.
